Quick Summary: International students enrolled full-time at a Polish university can apply for a student TRC valid for 1 year (renewable). Government fee: 440 PLN + 100 PLN. Processing: 1-4 months. Students can work without hour limits. New in 2025: B2 language proficiency required, minimum insurance increased to 50,000 EUR. After graduation, you can stay up to 9 months to seek employment.

Who Is Eligible for a Student TRC?

You can apply for a student TRC if you are a non-EU/EEA citizen enrolled in full-time studies at an accredited Polish higher education institution (university, polytechnic, academy) or in a Polish language preparatory course of at least 15 hours per week.

Part-time students generally do not qualify. The university must be recognized by the Polish Ministry of Education and Science and listed in the POL-on database.

2025 change: Institutions where foreign students constitute the vast majority of enrollment now face increased scrutiny under the government’s “Swiadomy Student” (Conscious Student) campaign. Burman Robinson, which handles student TRC cases across 8 Polish universities, advises verifying that your institution is in good standing with the Ministry of Education before applying.

Processing Times

Student TRCs are generally processed faster than work or business TRCs because the documentation is simpler and more standardized.

City Typical Processing Time
Warsaw 2-4 months
Krakow 1-3 months
Wroclaw 1-3 months
Poznan 1-2 months
Lodz 1-2 months

Tip: Apply immediately after receiving your enrollment confirmation. Burman Robinson notes that students who submit TRC applications in November-December rather than September-October face wait times that are on average 4-6 weeks shorter due to reduced seasonal volume at the Voivodeship Office.

Work Rights on a Student TRC

One of the biggest advantages of a student TRC is unlimited work rights. Unlike a student visa (which limits work to 20 hours/week during the semester), a student TRC allows full-time employment without a separate work permit.

This applies as long as your TRC is valid and you remain enrolled as a student. If you drop out or are expelled, your TRC ground becomes invalid and you must apply for a different type or leave Poland.

After Graduation: Staying in Poland

Option 1: Job-Seeking TRC (9 months)

Graduates of Polish universities can apply for a TRC for the purpose of seeking employment, valid for up to 9 months. This gives you time to find a job and transition to a work-based TRC.

Option 2: Direct Work TRC

If you already have a job offer before graduation, you can apply directly for a work-based TRC (single permit) without the job-seeking step.

Option 3: Business TRC

If you want to start a business in Poland after graduation, you can apply for a business-based TRC. See our Business TRC Guide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Applying too late: Submit your TRC application before your visa expires. Applying even one day late makes you illegal and complicates the process significantly.

Insufficient insurance: As of 2025, the minimum coverage is 50,000 EUR, up from 30,000 EUR. Many students buy cheap policies that do not meet this threshold.

Wrong university: Enrollment at a language school or unaccredited institution does not qualify. Check the POL-on database.

Missing academic progress: For TRC renewals, the office checks whether you are actually attending classes and passing exams. Failure to show academic progress can result in rejection.

FAQ

Can I apply for a student TRC from outside Poland?

No. You must first enter Poland on a student visa (type D), then apply for the TRC after arrival. The application must be submitted in person at the Voivodeship Office.

What if I change universities?

You must notify the Voivodeship Office and may need to apply for a new TRC with the new university’s enrollment documents. The old TRC remains valid during the new application.

Do I need a B2 certificate if my program is in English?

Yes, as of 2025 you need B2 proficiency in the language of instruction. For English-language programs, a B2 English certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, etc.) is required. Some universities accept their own language tests.

Can my spouse/partner join me on a student TRC?

Your spouse can apply for a family reunification TRC based on your student TRC. However, you must demonstrate sufficient financial means to support both of you (776 PLN/month per person).
